Here is my favorite sugar cookie recipe; it comes from a "pound lady" I don't personally know:

1 cup (2 sticks) butter
1 cup corn oil
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup confectioners' sugar
2 eggs
4 cups plus 4 tablespoons flour
1 teaspoon soda
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla (I take 2 teaspoons)

1. Cream butter, oil and sugars. Add eggs.
2. Sift dry ingredients; mix into creamed mixture. Add vanilla. Mix well.
3. Drop by teasopoonful on greased baking sheet.
4. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 10 minutes or until lightly browned.
5. Flaten them out with a spoon or plate;
6. Decorate with colorful sugars or sprinkles or chocolate kisses; use your imagination
Makes 8 dozen.

Going back to school can be costly. In a survey conducted by the National Retail Federation, it was found that this year consumers expect to spend an average of $606 per family for various back-to-school items. On top of the personal expense, many of the items purchased can be costly for the environment: plastic and vinyl binders that end up in landfills, plastic pens, and wasteful plastic packaging are a few examples.

Doing some thoughtful planning about the items you choose to purchase and how you re-use them can reduce the impact on your pocketbook as well as the impact on the planet. The US Environmental Protection Agency has some helpful tips to help make your back to school experience a little greener:

* If your children bring their lunch to school, package it in reusable containers instead of disposable ones, and carry them in a reusable plastic or cloth bag, or lunch box. Bring drinks in a thermos or water bottle instead of disposable bottles or cartons.
* Waste from packaging accounts for more than 30 percent of all the waste generated each year. Use school supplies wrapped with minimal packaging; use compact or concentrated products; or buy products that come in bulk sizes.
* Use nontoxic products, inks and art supplies, such as vegetable-based inks, white tape instead of whiteout, and water-based paints, and batteries with less mercury.
* Don’t be shy; tell the managers at your favorite stores that you and your friends are interested in seeing more green items on the shelves. Tell your teachers you want to have a time dedicated to learning more about what you and your fellow classmates can do for the environment.
* Cover your textbooks with cut-up grocery or shopping bags helps reduce waste and keeps your books in good condition. Be creative - use markers or colored pencils to give your covers unique and fun designs. Paper grocery bags and newspaper are also great for wrapping packages. A Japanese medical society seems to think so and evidently scientific tests are behind it as well.

It's been general knowledge within the medical community and in the general public that drinking plenty of water during the day (8 glasses is the norm) is good for you. Now, out of Japan, comes a more detailed water-wisdom that sounds quite fascinating. We are certainly going to try it ourselves.

If you suffer from headaches, body aches, arthritis, excess fatness, epilipsy, bronchitis asthma, TB, meningitis, eye diseases, cancer and menstrual disorders, or whatever else, the Japanese medical society suggests this method of treatment:

In the morning, before you do anything, drink 3 x 7oz glasses of water on your empty stomach, even before you brush your teeth;

Wait 45 minutes before eating breakfast, then enjoy a normal breakfast;

After breakfast, lunch and dinner, do not eat or drink ANYTHING for 2 hours, then drink more water.

You say you are not sick and don't need a cure? Really? Then do it just to enjoy a healthy life!

While water from your tap and cleansed water from a good drinking water filter are not at all the same value, make sure the water you drink is as contaminant-free as possible. Somebody Should Do Something About That!

Are you guilty of having uttered these words? I was listening to the radio today and they brought up this same discussion. Why not put your words into action? That “somebody” should be you. Maybe it’s helping victims involved in disaster like Haiti or as simple as picking up litter off of the street. It takes people to inspire change and make a difference. You might think that your actions are small in the big scheme of things, but they really do make a difference.

Six years ago, we started ReBinder because we saw a need and wanted to be part of the solution. Bottled Water Costs Too Much

It costs too much in many ways. Ask yourself: Why am I buying bottled water? Is it because it’s “the cool” thing to do? Or, because you think it’s cleaner, as in less polluted, than your tap water? In many ways, bottled water is less regulated than tap water and thus the quality is at best unreliable. Obviously, safe drinking water is important to you.

The water piped into your house costs you almost nothing, whereas bottled water costs you anywhere from 30 cents to several dollars for a “to-go” 8-12 oz bottle. The environmental cost to manufacture the plastic bottles and later to dispose of them is almost astronomical. More and more as a society we become aware of how wasteful this process is and how heavily this adds to the carbon footprint we are supposed to lower.

There is a much simpler way to have safe drinking water. If you believe as we do, that tap water is utility, NOT drinking water, and you want to get the pollutants including the chlorine out before you drink or cook with tap water, the solution is very simple and costs considerably less than the questionable quality of bottled waters.

Compostable Eating Utensils and Dinnerware?

Disposable dinnerware such as paper plates, plastic utensils, dishes and containers must have been invented in this practical USA and this practicality has circled the globe.

Having grown up in post-war Germany without such energy efficiency (mine: no washing dishes, no re-stacking into kitchen cabinets, etc) utensils, I thought this was truly progressive and I fully embraced it.

Really, I never suspected I'd be in favor of tattooing a child.

Now that I have seen the clever idea to temporarily tat a child to bring it back from being lost, I think it's a wonderfully clever idea. I wish I had had that when my children were little.

You may never have experienced it personally, but you probably did vicariously: a child getting separated for its parents at a shopping mall or airport, wandering away from the hand that lets go just for a second. Kids are curious and get easily distracted, leaving a parent terrified with fear and anxiety.

Is it "natural," "non-organic" or "certified organic?"

In my quest for all things healthy and "natural", I have come to realize that what potential customers are told in an offer, often conceals details that should be known before the consumer can make an informed choice.

That's why, when I came upon an article by Ed Mass of the website "Yes It's Organic" my eyes were opened to some meaningful terminology emerging in the world of all things "green." For openers, I found out the difference between the terms "natural" vs. "certified organic" in how cotton is grown, for instance. Cotton, of course, is thought of as being "natural", although that does not mean that it lacks toxicity. Maybe "natural" should more correctly be termed "non-organic."

This is what I found the difference to be: "Non-organic" (natural) crops are typically sprayed with insecticides, herbicides, etc. causing multiple insults to the soil, the environment, and the crop itself. I learned that these sprayed toxins result in volatile organic compounds released into the air, where they contribute to green house gases, and where they not only harm the health of the soil but also pollute ground water, lakes and streams. Most of all, concerning the customer directly, this sprayed toxic cocktail is also retained in the crops as they grow and are harvested and finally, you guessed it, there is a great chance of you wearing the residues in your clothing.

It's scary stuff and once you understand the downside, you can better value the other, eco-friendly alternative of "certified organic." Here no toxins such as fertilizers and pesticides are used; instead, organic matter and crop rotation is used to build strong and nutrient-rich soil not resulting in negatives either to the environment or to you.

That sounds like win-win to me; I'll go for that, and I'll henceforth examine the value when I hear "natural."

So what does green living mean, anyway? A lot of people have different definitions of green living, but it really all comes down to one fundamental concept. The earth's resources should not be depleted more rapidly than they can be replenished. That is the main and beginning concept and from there comes everything else. For instance, caring for the environment, caring for animals and other living creatures, caring for your health, your local community and the world.

There are all sorts of different resources in this world and when you start to look at them in detail, from fossil fuels to forests, agricultural land to wildlife, the ocean's depths to the air that we breathe. You will start to see how everything is interlinked and interconnected and that the actions we take today can definitely impact the future. Starting today, we should all stop for a minute and briefly reflect on our lifestyle and determine if there are actions and steps we can take to protect and preserve those resources.

We need to think about the concept of green living (can also be called sustainable living) as being very similar to your family's budget. If we are spending more than we make each month and start to neglect paying our bills, the bill collectors will start calling. If you continue to go down that path, you will end up owing so much money due to interest that you will never be able to pay it back. On the other side, if you're careful with your money and expenses, perhaps even save a little, and you're able to live within your means and keep everyone happy, especially yourself.
